OK. I am going to order the Newport Wiper motor for my 57 wagon. Is it a plug and play wiper or do I need to take the air inlet screen off and take out the cables-I am assuming they are good at this point. I also know what assume stands for and that my car likes to screw around with me and make life difficult.
thank, Mike

Mike,
The New Port conversion kit mounts directly in place of your existing vacuum motor and operates the wipers using the OEM cable drive system. If you are looking to replace the cable drive system, you will have a much more involved conversion. If your cable drive system is intact and functioning, then the electric motor conversion is a direct bolt-in replacment. You can check the function of your cable drive/transmission system by removing the vacuum motor and turning the cable drive shaft link with pliers (carefully and slowly) to see if the wiper blades are moving correctly. The electric conversion kit comes with a 2-speed switch that can be mounted below the dash or can be controlled by the original wiper switch with a special shaft kit (also provided by New Port as an option). Good Luck, Dave |

Don't know about a '57 but when I installed a Newport unit in my '54 ranch Wagon I took the radio and speaker out. Made things a lot easier.

Thanks Dave, that is what I wanted to know. I will have to get the optional extender as I want to use the original switch if possible.

5150, right now my dash is out for a rewire job, hopefully finishing that by Thanksgiving. Hoping, hoping, hoping....I will have to oil the snot out of everything in there and hope I don't have to take the cables out.

My 1955 sedan is similar to a 56 but it may be different enough from a 57 that I am not so sure my blog can help. At any rate, here is the link to my Newport installation...https://www.hotrodreverend.com/post/...-motor-upgrade
In addition to cutting out the nuisance of vacuum operated wipers, the thing I liked best was that I could use my original wiper knob/bezel - so no switch to mount under the dash, etc.

Rev, Just looked at your blog and I think that is going to be similar to my installation. Thank you very much. It should be waiting for me when I get back hom ein two weeks along with my rebuilt speedo.

I did one in my car in 2015. I had the dash out so it was easy. I bought the extender too. One big word of advice, take pictures of the linkage before taking anything apart. I had mine apart for months and it was fun getting it right again.

I am hoping to NOT take the linkage apart. I am hoping to just lube it in place as that is one mess I DON'T want to deal with right now. But I Also know my car has a mind of her own.
