Default Dynamic Fan operation

I have a NOS dynamic fan with temperature sender unit that fits into the bottom hose. I have fitted it to our 1946 Fordor with a stock C59A engine. I haven’t connected it to the sender yet. So it spins freely from the inertia of the pulley when the engine is running, quiet too.
Anyway, before fitting l connected it directly to 6v battery, expecting it to spin, it didn’t. An ohmmeter connected to the lead and earth shows continuity, so l am guessing it needs dismantling and a clean up. Additionally, my understanding is that this fan operates at a ‘progressive’ speed depending on engine temperature. I imagine this speed is controlled by voltage variation sent from the sender.
At the rear of the fan shaft is a circlip which holds a plate.
Before l investigate, has any member dismantled one of these or know of any repair instructions or any guidance please. Or is there a correct method of testing l should carry out. It came undisturbed in original box.
