Where does this spring belong?

1935 new to me 2Dr Sedan.


The car is on jack stands and I'm underneath on a creeper cleaning, inspecting, and lubing. When i come out from underneath, I see this spring on the floor several feet behind the right rear wheel.I didn't hear anything that sounded like a spring flying off.


I checked the clutch and brake return springs, mid car, and they are both in place. The brake and clutch peddles return and feel normal. Where does this spring belong?

Looks like a brake spring to me . . . due to the thickness of it and the fact that the two ends are 180 degrees in the opposite direction. Just a wild-ass guess though!

It goes in the center cross member to the mechanical brake mechanism

hey Dennisfly,that spring,i'd agree it looks like a brake peddle spring. notice separation right third of spring,maybe lost its tension a bit why it was replaced by prev.O maybe during relpacement was laying some where underneath finally desided to fall from it's resting place? Tom.

Does not look like any of the 35 springs. Appears to be tooo heavy for the cowl vent. all the brake springs appear different. It may have been some improper replacement put on by the previous owner. Below is the brake rod retracting spring and the clutch and brake pedal retracting springs. Look for the brake pedal, clutch pedal, brake rod retracting you may find one missing.

I agree with Terry. That spring doesn't look like any of the springs on my '35 coupes or sedans.

Thanks to all for your thoughts. I guess I might find out when I finish my work and drive the car.



I just had a thought. My lawn mower resides in the same garage although on the other side. There are several springs on the mower deck. I better check those!

I believe you're on to something there. Ford didn't tend to wrap the diameter of coil springs that tightly. That has the 'look' of a mower-deck spring.

I have an early 36 2 dr sedan. On mine, the spring should go under the passenger seat and hooked to the seat frame hardware and then to a bracket that is mounted to the floor between the front seat pivots. It keeps the unoccupied seat from pivoting forward against the dash durning a panic stop. Hope this helps.

Vee839 thank you. I believe you are probably correct because I removed both front seats to work under the dash before I was under the car. I never saw that spring when removing the seat but the lighting was less than ideal. I'm not home right now, but when I return tomorrow, I will check for the seat spring. I'll let you know what I find.

My seats are out of my car right now, but the pictures show the eye bolt where one end of the spring attaches and where the other end attaches the bracket.
