Just read this sad news story in the Hobby News and Views column of OldCars Weekly:
A 76 year old DeLuz (Calif.) man died after being pinned beneath his 1935 Chrysler..... According to reports, Ness was using his pickup top move the Chrysler Airflow from an enclosed trailer. After he got the car out of the trailer, Ness got out of the vehicle without securing it and the car rolled onto him, according to the California Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the scene. |

For whatever reason I always secure the handbrake in my old cars. At first I thought this was going to be q failed or non existent jack stand. Someone once told me that without a jack stand I was just relying on an o ring to hold the car in the air.
I'm sure we all have a scar or two to remind us to do something differently but you need to at least think a bit. Nothing against the subject of the thread just wishing you all a safe new year.

All it takes is a moment of a in attention or distraction. Couple of years ago I put a new
starter in my 48 business coupe. I hit the button on the bottom of the solenoid to see if it would turn over. I had left the key on and the car in gear! The only thing that stopped it was a board sticking out from a post in the shed I was working in. I'm holding the front end thinking I can call my wife in the house to come knock it out of gear. Also thinking this thing could crush me against a concrete wall. OOOPs cell is laying on kitchen table. After what seemed like 3 days it stalled but I had $960 worth of damage to the door. Wife called me a dumb A## and she was right(after 40 years of marriage I hate when that happens). I pull keys out now and make sure if I'm doing something that could go wrong somebody else is there. |

You can never be too careful. And accidents... sometimes they just happen.

And, if there's a welder involved in the project underneath the car, that's an added dimension for safety!!....and I have the scars to prove it!!

Don’t forget the split second stupid reaction to the emergency! As a kid under a clunker welding exhaust pipes, the under seal caught on fire. Smart me, turn off the gas and turn up the oxy to blow out the flames. Yes, I can point to my scars too.

The fleet garages I worked with on safety required the mechanic to remove the truck keys from the ignition and hang them on the driver's door with an "Out of Service" tag. The shop manager or another mechanic could see at keys & tag at glance. All was well.

I was having a talk with a friend about emerg brakes and he said he does not use his, just leaves it in gear.
Fine, But I told him if he never uses it then the inner cable can become frozen in the outer case and when he does use it the brake will not release and then you are hooped! I always use mine! |

I had a friend that was checking fuel pressure at the fuel pump.
He had the trouble light right there and he told a buddy to hit the starter button to turn the engine over. Some gas squirted on the trouble light, and he had an instant fire. His shirt sleeve caught fire, burned his hand and arm pretty bad and burned some wiring and paint. It could have been so much worse. ![]() .

Have you ever wondered why many shop manuals will start-off on a repair with: DISCONNECT BATTERY! It'll hopefully save you when underneath, trans is IN GEAR, and the starter begins to crank! DD . |

As we are airing horror stories, here is mine when you leave the ignition on while checking a faulty fuel pump, yes it will be rebuilt after my workshop gets rebuilt.

That's the way I used to crank my J-3 N2086M (only on the ground)
Wonder if someone is in the back seat?
