Today I took my mom for a spin in the Tudor and as she enjoyed it so much I promised to bring the car again in march next year when we celebrate her 100th birthday. As my car has RH steering it was funny to watch the faces of pedestrians or oncoming traffic when "Mom" gave it some throttle

That is quite true, being born in 1922 in eastern Prussia, her family had to flee in the war when the Soviet troops neared. The family wanted to leave their home on board of the "Wilhelm Gustloff" which left Gotenhaven on 30. January 1945 to make it over the eastern sea but my grandma insisted to wait for grandpa. He was recruted as a postman in their hometown and came too late for the departure of the ship. He told me later that he shot a bullet through the tank of his Fiat Topolino and the Wanderer motorcycle when he left his house to make the vehicles useless for the soviets. I still have the original title of the Topolino!
I cannot think of their emotions when they heard the news that the Gustloff was sunk by soviet torpedos, carrying more than 10000 people. Only around 1200 were rescued. Mothers family arrived finally here in southern Germany with two wooden boxes containing the lousy rest of a once proud live in eastern Prussia where Granddad had his own seewing machine and bicycle shop. Here they got busy to work again and managed to buy a house, granddad was working til 75 years old. My mum married another refugee, my dad came from a german enclave in Romania where most of his family was abducted to Siberia while he was soldier in the german army. So again a life and a family was started with empty hands but I always remember my parents smiling and working hard and telling me to never give up! Last edited by vincent; 11-08-2021 at 04:41 AM. What an inspiring story. Funny how you ended up in Germany with an American bodied Ford and we ended up in America with a German Bodied Ford!! |

What a life full of many trying historic events! I've read the tragic story of the "Wilhelm Gustloff" and to learn of your family missing boarding is a miracle. Thank you for sharing a brief glimpse of her life and the photos.
May she live another 99 years. |

Rockfla - what a nice car you have! Congrats on that beauty! Thanks to all you folks for the wishes, I will show my mom your postings. Every time I visit her she says I should greet everyone that still knows her - she is aware that being close to 100 years there are not many old friends around anymore. Nice to know there are several new here in the Ford barn!
