Default 35 fuel pump rod

Today I fired my motor, have rebuilt carb, rebuilt fuel pump, and working that by hand it has good suction, have a fuel pump rod 7 7/8" aluminum intake, and when I crank the motor it moves up and down, but it is not reaching the fuel pump arm. I put grease in the cup on the fuel pump arm and the rod is not reaching it. I have 2, 35 motors and noticed one has an early alum. intake on it ( according to pics ) and the one on mine is a later intake also alum. and there is an 1'' difference in the height where the fuel pump mounts. should i use a 8 7/8" rod or just hook up an electric pump. Thanks.

Use the longer rod. I also have an electric pump for those rare occasions where the truck sits too long and the gas evaporates or leaks out. I do not use it to run with. Mechanical pumps are great (for the most part) just as Henry made them.

the early manifold takes a longer rod 40-9400-B, the later manifold being shorter takes the shorter rod 48-9400-B according to the green book is 7 7/8 long. Make sure the rod is in the bushing and not off to the side, this is probably causing the problem.
