Installing the control rods
I am having a major problem threading the two control rods into the two openings, on the steering column, where they come out and the accept the springs, control arms and the two holding pins.
According to Les Andrews directions on page 1-303, I still, can’t follow that procedure. I don’t seem to see the two tubs inside the main tube, to install the rods into and if the upper bushing is installed - you can’t see in. Does anyone have a helpful suggestion ? Dave |

Re: Installing the control rods
Is the upper bushing installed correctly? It it is twisted, you won't be in-line with the lower rod support tube(s).

Stay with it. You will find the hole. It just takes time.

Re: Installing the control rods
Thanks friends- there are NO internal guide tubes and the top bearing was in alinement- time after time. Jackson111 said, keep trying, but I could not find either hole. I finely slid two #24 bell wires up and into steering tube, used the pin holes to anchor the wires to the rods, then pulled them in. Had to work at it, but it’s done.".....Dave

Re: Installing the control rods
Hope you installed the 2 rubber anti rattler rubbers about half way on the rods.

Re: Installing the control rods
It took a lot of trial and error along with lots of mouth, tongue and eye contortions to get both of them in when I did mine!

Re: Installing the control rods
This was the most frustrating part of helping a friend restore his '30 coupe. We spent hours trying, with lots of different methods, to put the rods in. Then BAM they were in. Like Jackson says "Stay with it. You'll find the hole."

Re: Installing the control rods
One can use long welding rods, wire coat hangers straightened out, acoustical ceiling hanger wires, etc. before seating the bushing as stated above. The engine splash pan may need to be removed if column in the car.

Re: Installing the control rods
dlfrish,
I drilled a short 1/8 inch deep 1/12 inch diameter hole in the rod ends. Then I pushed a long steel wire with 1/12 inch diameter from bottom to the top and stuck it outside into the end of the hand lever. Then pressed the hand lever slowly down and guide it with the steel wire through the lower opening. Many passions!

Re: Installing the control rods
I ran 6lb test monofilament fishing line up through the tube, tying it to the holes in the bottom of each rod. Then I fed the line and rod back down through the tube and used tension on the line to bring the rod ends into alignment with the hole. The fishing line sheared off as the rod was pushed home. Worked well.

Re: Installing the control rods
makes one wonder how the factory did it as we all know assembly processes were on a hustle wherever possible

Re: Installing the control rods
Guten Abend.
This is simply explained, because I worked for Ford in quality control until 1980. There were different auxiliary tools (rails, stencils, visors, ...) for the various assembly steps that were only available within the factory and not for the service workshop. Because the slowest work step set the pace for the assembly line.
