Where has billben/flathead gone

My good friend who established that site passed away a couple of years ago. Bill Bentley helped me get my first order of books printed and was someone I wanted to be like when I grow up.

There was a Flathead lover from CA who kept the site going for some time but I am not aware of the present circumstances.

Bill Bentley passed about 5 - 6 yrs ago. The site remained active for maybe a year, but folded.

I believe it was Carl in Roseville CA who kept the site going

Well, that is a snapshot capture of the site at some time in the past. It has already gone and you can't guarantee all the links will work.

Check out the website it resides on : "web.archive.org". Also, "~billben/flathead.htm" is an archaic way to associate a directory of files to a website back when individual websites were too expensive or too difficult to set up. It looks to me that someone had the foresight to move that information to "cloud" storage where it can reside forever, rather than leaving it on an old website that would eventually disappear. Kudos to them!

This is interesting. I used the site that proceeded this one and then later in time this one. If I remember correctly there was a notice posted several years ago about some of the information going away and I downloaded a lot of it at that time. Was totally unaware of the billben connection, or didn't recognize the site I was on!!

HELLO and THANK YOU for this information....WOW....I clicked on the above link and then clicked on the link FLATHEAD TOWING and read the information. Never even considered the possible issue at hand with flat towing. Has anyone else flat towed a vehicle with the closed/solid drive line with manual transmission. I have a car-dolly and was planning on towing my '36 Ford pickup with closed/solid drive line with 3 speed manual transmission to (approximately 3-4 hours drive) long distance car shows. Any thoughts back on this would greatly be appreciated. I might add that my '36 Ford pickup is pretty much stock but has the MITCHELL 36% Overdrive installed.

In 1967 I flat towed my 40 Ford coupe 300 miles behind my 57 Pontiac from Poughkeepsie, NY to Wellfleet, MA. Used a tow bar bolted to the 40 frame rails on the front. Did not disconnect the drive shaft. Left trans in neutral. Didn't hurt anything. But, you can't back up.

If you're real worried, just fill the gearbox to the top.

Re flat towing: If you prop the clutch pedal down it allows the natural drag in the gears to keep things turning and circulate oil around the box.

PS. those ports remind me of the way we did them back in the day. I don't quite do them that way anymore. Like everything else the system of porting evolves over the years, snd we keep improving it as the years go by. However, those ports work quite well.

Bill Bentleys site and the Techno site were related. all the info on the techno site came from members contributions from Bill's site. when Bill Passed away and Carl took over I inquired if there was a way for some one to download all the info on the techno site onto a cd/dvd or flash drive. and make it available for sale at a reasonable cost to help keep the site going, but got no response. I mentioned at the time that If I had the knowledge, that I would do it. I was not very computer/tech literate at the time , and still am not. I am lucky I can turn the computer on. There is a lot of info there on the techno site . I printed a lot of it out, but I doubt I got it all.

That was the first Early Ford Flathead V-8 website that I tuned into, probably in the mid to late 90's. I felt very fortunate to have found that for all the friends and great information found there. Later, probably around 2000, I met Ol' Ron at the York, Pa, NSRA Street Rod Nationals, bought his book, and followed his advice to check out the Fordbarn website....been here ever since I did that :-)
