Looking for V-8 luggage rack dimensions
A friend wants me to fab a luggage rack for one of his projects. My intension is to make a functional and visually acceptable (to the normal public) rack; but not necessarily as accurate as an original or repop stamping.
I was hoping someone could provide some basic dimensions for a start. Overall width along with heights at the center and edges, as indicated on the picture. |

Re: Looking for V-8 luggage rack dimensions
Measurements for racks can vary from car to car. It would be helpful to know the make, year, and body style.

Re: Looking for V-8 luggage rack dimensions
I thought the same thing when I read the OP. The picture shows a rack on a '35 ford sedan that could probably fit from '33-'36, but in '37 these racks became wider. I could provide measurements for the rack shown and also for a '37 rack, but would like to know which year and model this rack would actually be used on.

Re: Looking for V-8 luggage rack dimensions
Okay, here are the dimensions of a luggage rack I have that is the same as the one in your picture. This rack was removed from a 35 slant back sedan before I purchased it ~ 10 yrs. ago.
Width as measure from the back of rack at the hardware fastening locations = 31-3/4" in both locations. Height as measured from back of rack at center = 15-3/8", and as measured near ends where radius begins at top and bottom = 14-5/8" on both ends.

Re: Looking for V-8 luggage rack dimensions
Thanks JM 35 and DavidG for the dimensions and further info on the model year variations.
The intent is to make a functional rack for road trips that has the general appearance of the original style. Kinda partial to the later arched top, even tho the flat top would be easier to make. |

Re: Looking for V-8 luggage rack dimensions
If you can use a 1937 rack that is about 35-3/4" wide, PM me. It even has an original 1933 V8 emblem that was probably put on in the 30's to dress it up. Some of the mounting brackets are missing.
