Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
Ok, so it’s been some time since I dismantled the seat on my 1936 5W. I can’t seem to remember what hardware went where when it comes to the hinge on the backrest. I found some #10-32 screws with lock washers that I labeled as coming from the hinge, however the screws not long enough to get through the two mounts and engage the T nuts. Does anyone have info on the original hardware used in the location described below:
2 screws that mount that 1 end of hinge pivot to wooden seat frame back 2 screws that mount the other end of the hinge to the wooden spring backrest Details for the hinge bolt itself (shouldered bolt). I seem to have misplaced this bolt. I’ve circled in Red the areas of the photo I’m describing above. |

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
I can help you out, as I have all the hardware from my '36 3w seat. Unfortunately however, I won't be home until next Tuesday (Jan. 8th), but if you don't get an answer before that, I'll get the info you need then.

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
Reviewing your pix leads me to believe that you are referring to the seat back "prop" not the hinge, both of the hinges appear to be fastened in place.

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
If you have a trunk and not rumble seat, then the hardware on the seat bracket is the same as for the trunk. If not, the shoulder bolt has cup type washer that works as a slide with a special spring type flat washer inside. I do not know of a supplier of these parts, but the shoulder bolt can be made using a spacer piece of steel brake line.

The shoulder bolt shown on this picture also looks like the one on my kid's coupe. I didn't have one for the seat or trunk and have not located any real ones yet; made use of an elevator bolt and short piece of tube for now.
The fasteners that held the two parts to the seat frame were all round head machine screws. |

I wonder if the shoulder bolt from the hood of a 41-48 Ford would work? Also check your local Ace Hardware. They usually have a variety of shoulder bolts.

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
I’ve looked high and low for a shoulder bolt. Based on the measurements of the prop, it appears to be a 5/16 bolt with a 3/8 shoulder. All the shoulder bolts I’ve found are socket head cap screws with a shoulder, haven’t found any hex head shoulder bolts. I guess the search or improvision continues....the brake line sounds like a workable solution.

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
Perhaps not as long as the one shown in the photo in #9, but the Model A, '32, and '33-'34 deck lid props all are basically configured the same way. Not sure about the '33-'34 version in terms of an available reproduction, but they're out there for Model As and also for '32s complete with the attaching hardware. United Pacific makes one for its '32 coupe deck lids, for example.

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
The 1938 Ford Hardware book list 350304-S2 as the shoulder bolt for the seat support 36-38 1/4"-20 x 23/32" hex head.
The same bolt was used to support the deck lid 31-36 If you have a trunk look to the support hardware. Last edited by Terry,OH; 01-04-2019 at 09:35 AM. |

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
Talked to Fred at Southside Obsolete...no luck. However the photo from Don is a big help...I think I can duplicate it. Is there anyone that can confirm the hex size (I believe it to be 1/2") and the length of the shoulder? I'm assuming the 23/32" above is the overall length of the bolt.

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
Thanks Don, for interchanging this to the 1928-36 trunk hinge prop bolt.
This is reproduced (USA... Snyders), we have in stock: A-41530-MB @ 7.50. Drake had/has the trunk prop for the 1935-36 in stainless (have not checked availability recently) The 1933-34 prop arm is made by Tom Bay at R&J Enterprises, however his does not have the bracket that attaches to the lid itself. |

Re: Need help - 1936 seat hinge hardware
23/32" is not the overall length of the bolt. It is the distance from under the head to the end of the threads. That's the standardized method of measuring bolt and screw lengths.
As the Ford hardware catalog illustrations are actual size unless noted otherwise, the head on 350304-S2 was likely greater than 1/2"; rather it was more like 9/16", judging from Don's illustration. |
