I just tried to install a fan belt on 34 I am working on . belt was new (33-36 )
belt was too short . I ended up having to change generator pully to smalest could find. belt is on but very tight gen is as low as it can be. Any ideas why ? I know that a longer belt will work. any one had this before ????? |

Yep The ones sold by the Parts houses are to short.
There is a Gates belt which fits much better -can't remember the details but will be on here somewhere (540 seems to resonate) . I would not run with the smaller belt I did and the inlet manifold broke at the generator mount -Pushing the fan and generator through the radiator -Not good. May not be totally due to the tight belt but it wouldn't have helped -Karl

I also had the same fan belt problems some years ago on my original 34. I use a Dayco or Gates or Good Year B54 which is 57"around. You also have to watch the tops of the radiator hoses for fan blade clearance as it is pretty close there. Regards, Kevin.

Always a good idea to give the fan a test spin by hand before starting the engine after installing a new fan belt.

Use the correct length belt and hopefully avoid this

![]() Yes - Happened at the end of a 1200 mile trip about 30 seconds after I commented to my wife how well the car had gone. Was a big bang- followed by lots of steam and water on the road ! The AA (our AAA) told me that they would sent a repairman out first to assess the situation and repair the car if he could . My response was just send a truck! -Karl
