Default 35 pickup grill repair

I am in the process of repairing the grill for a 35 pickup, several of the vertical bars need to be replaced along with the hole for the crank. My question is, should the horizontal bars have a 1/4 inch rod welded to them or is this a non-factory reinforcement?

That's non-factory. The grille bars got their strength from their tunnel shape. No reinforcing bars.

That's what I suspected, I will try to remove those rods and hammer up some replacement inserts. What is the size of the hole for the crankshaft, how wide the sides and how high from the bottom of the grill opening is it?
