Back in the old days i drove a 1960 station wagon, company car beat on it daily. They shift better good and if you wanted to wind it up.Start in low, shift quick to shift to think it was drive, then back to low and it would hold in 2 nd gear.
Today i think with adaptor c4 would be the way to go. |

Only the Ford-O-Matic will bolt up to a Y-block,there are adapter kits to bolt up to an AOD or C4 but they are not wallet friendly, see www.transmissioncenter.net and look thru the AOD section. You can probably swap in a 5.0 (aka 302) and AOD or C4 for less than the cost of an adapter setup,it's why I ditched the Y-block and others have too.

the reason i ask is im still having problems on the overdrive kickdown rod and linkage.... due to not having the linkage or the stock intake for the linkage to bolt to,or the stock carb to bolt the liankge to, and cant figure out a cable rig up..was looking for a tranny that ran off of the vacuum but guess im S.O.L unless i get a adapter plate or swap a three on the tree back in it ...thanks for the fast response's

OK,clarify this,do you have a 3 speed on the tree overdrive that you need linkage parts for? And what intake and carb do you now have,as I may be able to locate some parts. There is a way to manually work the overdrive on Google with a simple kit that consists of a switch and a cable,so you pull cable for overdrive and flick the switch since you really only need overdrive for highway cruising anyway.

the previous owner of this motor and tranny said it came out of a 56 fairlane,it does not have the two rear mount bolt holes on intake to mount stock linkage,i was told the carb is a two barrel holley.. but i dont see holley on it anywhere i want to switch the intake for a four barrel and edelbrock later so i dont think finding the stock linkage is a way i want to go what did you look under on google for the manuel swith/cabe kit?? |

I have been driving the FMX for years now. It's an cheap way of getting the job done. Must have some mechanical ability but for what I was looking for it's great...Gerry |

you have to have the linkage for a ford o matic to shift right as i guess you know.rather than another tranny wouldnt it be easier to get the linkage and intake.the cruise o matic shifts from vacuum.

I used the front pump and torque conv from the ford-o and the shift linkage and it also uses vac. line to make it shift. It's important to use the tail shaft from the ford-o in order to keep the mounting at the same spot and not have to mess with the speedo geer.It shifts in all 3 geers. It's in the red 54 as my avatar... Gerry

You keep saying overdrive but the Fordomatic and Cruisomatic did not have overdrive. Are you referring to the passing gear kickdown that engages to drop down when you floor the accelerator?

gerry you say you used a ford o converter.i understood you needed a merc converter.the merc com and fmx used a different input shaft than ford o.

I used the front pump from the Ford-O, that allowed me to use the air cooled torque converter from the Ford-o also, no need for a special torque converter as the article talked about.. I also installed a oil cooler no big project either. Gerry

i will explain a little more about how to spot a cruise o matic in case you want to go that way.they came in 59 to 62 in the y block and as i said shift from vacuum.just look at the shift coluum you will see D2 D1 L.there was also a 2 speed from 60 to 62 with an alum, case.i believe it was vacuum as well.
