Great day for a drive
Got up with the sun yesterday, changed the quick change gears to 3.04 in the speedster. Waved to the hot-air balloonist that had just got off the ground across the creek as I pulled out of the drive. Headed North to the Corona airport for a cruise-in, (free of course, I am a bit tight). Had the cruizer special breakfast, 2 eggs on an English muffin, 2 strips of thick delicious bacon and a glass of OJ, for 3 bucks! Bought $5 worth of 50/50 tix, won a tool kit, bottle of wine and the 50/50! Should have gone directly to Vegas but continued on to Monrovia for a 4 ever 4 meeting and some good chow at Chuck Sharpe's place. Won the drawing that drivers of bangers get in too! Got home around 3:30, just in time for a nap! The jaunt was about 180 miles (speedo way off because of the QC rear), I added 10 gallons of regular and had about 2 more in the tank when I got home than I had left with! It was a bit cool in the am but with a good jacket (El Mirage 200 mph Club), a wool cap with a leather bombers cap over that and fur (expensive jackrabbit) gloves it was really good. Sure glad I live on the left coast where we can drive our A's all year!

Is ice on the road that slippery stuff? Not familiar with it? See you in a couple of months Eddy!

A great reason to live in California, indeed! I lived there for 20 years, so understand
the comment. Of course, living in Florida these days, I would have understood the comment----regardless. It gets a tad breezy where I lived in Santa Barbara County, but not bad because in those days I drove a '30 tudor. Your speedster sounds like a blast. Jack

Re: Great day for a drive
Jim, the left coast is the place to be! Sounds like a great run. Today I'm off to look at a 31 chasis for my next project. I ordered the roadster pickup body and bed from Brookville, and the Miller overhead you recommended.

Re: Great day for a drive
It is a great day for a drive! Negative wind chill, roads closed to wimpy cars, and we are out and about with our Roadster here in Illinois. The dense air makes more horsepower. For those of you that can't take cold weather, here is how real enthusiasts enjoy their Model A. The chains on the tires make the A unstoppable! Gar Williams

Re: Great day for a drive
Never drove with chains on. Bet there is a lot of road noise with the chains.

Re: Great day for a drive
To Broken Spoke, If you need a 6-spline coupler, try your local tractor dealer, it is a common item.
About tire chains, I have actually used them, in Germany. I was there when the wall went up in '61. |

Re: Great day for a drive
The chains are noisy and not made for driving on bare roads. They wear out very quickly on dry pavement, especially at speeds over a crawl. When I first drove with these chains on my Coupe, all that was used on snow and ice was sand and cinders. The less traveled roads remained snow covered for most of the winter until a thaw occurred. Re: Great day for a drive
Ron,
Yes, the photo was taken in 1932 and supposedly shows Mas Harry during the Grand Prix Rämen in Hedemora, Sweden. There is a video of the 1933 Grand Prix Rämen on YouTube with lots of Model A's shown racing in the snow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgg8yf3suBc ....those crazy Swedes! Re: Great day for a drive
That was a great video! Cool comes to mind but that would be a bit of a pun! I noticed this was before seat belts.

Re: Great day for a drive
I really like the photos of Gar's car with chains. Are these specially made up to fit, or can one get them fairly easily off-the shelf'? - I would love a set!
