Question lube

Hi, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Question, is there a safe multi-viscosity lube for 42 merc rear end and transmission or should I continue to use the red sticky stuff? Thanks for any responses.

If you have access to SAE 140 that would be close to original unless it is a GL-5 type. 85W/140 will work well in cold weather but may show signs of leakage in hot weather but they are GL-5 as well. The GL-1 type lubes are getting harder to find at the local level but can be ordered from most all of the restoration parts suppliers(Restoration Supply Co. for 1). GL-1 has low sulphur additives that won't deteriorate silver and copper alloy bushings like the second gear mainshaft bushing, reverse idler bushing, etc.

Some oil is better than no oil even if it has a sulphur content.
