Turn Signals again
Ok every one. We don't want to close this can of worms.
I have search this form for a fix to my signal lights blinking too fast. I have found a lot of of could be's, may be's, should be's and some wannabe's, but I haven't found anyone that has a fix. I also have tried all the suggestions that I have found. I have the Signal-Stat 900 with a 3 prong 6 volt flasher. I have 4 separate lights so I am not using the car lights. I also have a light on the inside so I will know when the signal lights are on. The only thing I did different from the instructions, I didn't hook up the wire to the brake light switch, since I am not using the car lights. The lights work ok, just blink too fast, and a old man can't have anything faster than he is. Thanks Johnny

Re: Turn Signals again
I have a suspicion that the bulbs you are using with a thermal flasher is not drawing enough current. Go to a higher wattage bulb and should slow down. It is like on older vehicles when one of the turn signal bulbs are burnt out that the other bulb flashes quickly.

What would be a higher wattage bulb. I looked, but didn't find any. But that doesn't mean there isn't any. LOL Thanks Johnny

Re: Turn Signals again
I wired mine to independent lamps using #1129 bulbs I ran a ground from each lamp to the front of the car using the generater bracket as my ground. I haven't had any problems with my directional.

Re: Turn Signals again
I am using the 535 Flasher. I guess if I can't get the flasher's to slow down, I will just have to drive faster. Thanks Johnny

http://www.replacementlightbulbs.com/index.html If bulbs can't be found locally, this should help. I can't help with halogens, but, with incandescents the 1129 is 21CP while the 1133 is 32 CP. The 535 flasher is the right flasher as long as its an old properly working one. I've found that newer made foreign ones are junk. A NOS unit might have to be gotten from eBay, etc. Rear LEDs work fine along with 21cp front turns [ converted from the parks] and either 10 or 21 cp [ can't remember which] cowls fired by a good NOS 535 flasher. I tried 2 or 3 new ones before installing an old one. Some had been insistent that electronic flasher units would work, but, I bought several that seemed liked they might work from their specs. They didn't. However there is a newer one on the market that might work. I believe the number is EF-33W if I remember correctly. |

Re: Turn Signals again
I agree that it is likely insufficient current draw. I don't know the wattage on those halogens. If you just replaced one side with regular incandescent that would answer that question.
Just out of curiosity, am I correct in assuming that you are running 6 volt positive ground?

Re: Turn Signals again
Quite often the flasher is the fault, cheap flashers we get today are junk, you need an old mechinal flasher, I believe restoration supply in Escondido has them, the new modern flashers just don't cut it for 6 volt.

Re: Turn Signals again
For 5 bucks you can change all the bulbs from halogen. Not a big investment to find out the problem and likely correct it. Wayne

Re: Turn Signals again
Tom, I have been thinking the same thing about the flasher. I have checked and double checked everything I have done and still the same thing. I will look on ebay for new flasher. Thanks Johnny

Re: Turn Signals again
You could connect an ammeter in the feed line to the flasher and see how many amps it draws when the signals are turned on. Halogen bulbs should be plenty of draw to make it flash.
