39 starter button

Hi folks

How do you remove the starter button from 39 deluxe? Do you reach in from back and squeeze each side? Also what is the deminsion of the hole?

My dad installed a starter button on the dash of my 35 back in the day. Not sure if it's the same as the button on your 39 but mine has two spring clips behind the dash that just need to be squeezed together to get the button out. If I recall, there was flattened indents on each side of the hole to accept those spring clips. I left my button in the dash when I restored the car as an anti-theft device.

Thanks I think, I need to replace both the button and the wire from the button to the solenoid. I read that the repop buttons are no good, so I may use a heavy duty boat button under the dash, if the original hole is too small.

There's probably someone on here that has a NOS button for you. My button is just filling the hole...no wires hooked to it. My dad put it there back in the day so I wanted to keep it but I converted it back to the floor switch.

On my 41 the floor switch changes the radio station.
I believe mopar cars used floor switch for starting the engine.

Ford did too. I believe he's talking about his '35. The '39 had a starter button.

Dont know where the info came from the the"repops" are no good, We have used several of Carpenters reproduction starter buttons on two 40 Fords and two 39 Fords with complete satisfactory service. You might save yourself a lot of problems an work by using a later two wire button. And I did install a button out of a 50 Merc in my 40 Ford back in 1959, Am now restoring that 40 back to original using a Carpenters button. You have a great looking 39 Deluxe coupe.

I am on my 5th starter button in 3 years for my '37. I finally got smart and bought a 'good' starter button from Charlie NY last year. No more trouble. Didn't matter where I ordered new ones from (3 different vendors) they were all junk. None lasted more than 3 months. Most a lot less than that. Pitiful. NOS or a known good one is my suggestion. Just my opinion

I went through at least four and all were crap. Finally started hoarding NOS and NORS. For my restorations, I simply change the plastic button so it is correct for the respective vehicle.

Also, besides the repop buttons being poop, the "start" is stamped so ridiculously light, it's a joke.
