Running Rough - Question
Hi guys,
Took my truck out tonight for a ride, stopped and got some gas (I had about a half tank) and she was running fine for about 10-15 miles then as I headed up a hill she started sputtering, spitting, coughing and losing power and even backfired a couple times. As I crested the hill hit the flats she continued like that for another mile or so and then smoothed out. I figured I'd better head for home, so I turned around and drove back the 20 miles to home. All the way home she ran smooth as silk at 55 mph all the way and even climbed two hills with no problem. Anyone have any ideas?? Any input would be greatly appreciated Thanks Scott |

Re: Running Rough - Question
If u had bad gas it would have kept running like crap..
Ck your basics,,, point gap, clean them, gas cap vent, lower plate wire if u have one. Or if it's wireless deep six it.. Chepo replacement ign switches can also be int Last edited by Mitch//pa; 08-19-2016 at 04:25 AM. |

Re: Running Rough - Question
Are you running a fuel filter ? I had a similar problem a couple years ago. Would run fine then start coughing and backfiring. I did see some very small debris in the the fuel bulb but I didn't think that would cause it. Normally when she started backfiring I'd shut or down, or she'd stall on her own - I'd tap the carb a couple of times and she'd run fine again.
I installed an inline fuel filter and flushed out the carb and haven't had a problem since. |

Re: Running Rough - Question
I think Mitch has some very good points about points. I had a similar problem and I found my points were set to close because the rub strip had worn down. But at higher speed I was able to get along.

Re: Running Rough - Question
To tell the truth... no one has a clue. Could be any number of things. Like was already mentioned...check your basics and run er some more. Any "diagnosis" will be just guessing on our part

Re: Running Rough - Question
Scott, I don't know if this is your problem but if I drive my Town Sedan for a bit and then stop (say while in a Auto Parts Store) and shut off the fuel while it's parked, it does the same thing as you describe. The only thing I can think of is that the gas in the float bowl starts boiling.
If I leave the gas on or shut off the gas and run the float bowl dry, it doesn't act up. Easy to try... |

Re: Running Rough - Question
I had a similar problem yesterday on a jet ski. It was wiggly crusty connections at the battery.

Re: Running Rough - Question
I am not running a fuel filter. Didn't know you could put one in a model A. Would you mind sharing a picture?

Re: Running Rough - Question
You could have just had some crap plug one of your jets. You can give it a quick choke and try to blow the debris out if it happens again. I'm guessing because you were pulling a hill, it's gas related. BUT , who knows??

Re: Running Rough - Question
Yes it's a magnet but it's not my picture or car..(( Found it doing a search ). I have found using these filters in the bowl collects / filters any debris so the magnet is really not needed...
I guess someone wanted super back up protection... Good eye |
