38 horn gremlins
My horn started to blow when I turn the wheel on the way home the other night.
Made it home and parked the car and idsconnected the battery. I didn't want to get woken up at 3am with the horn stuck on. I hooked up the battery and moved the car to the shop. The horn started blowing none stop. The question is where is the first place to look for a fault? Would it be at the top or bottom of the steering column? Thanks |

I would check the wires leading up to the bottom of the column first, you will probably need to replace the wire in the column, use the old wire to fish in the new one, I sure after all these years the original wire has many bare spots.

Re: 38 horn gremlins
Yep, the wire that operates the horn is a ground wire, so any place along the wire that touches metal will work the horn. Most likely inside the steering shaft, but easier to check the other parts of the wiring first.

Re: 38 horn gremlins
I have a similar problem on my 35PU. but mine is the other way around. It won't blow. Has been working until recently. Any suggestions other than above?

Re: 38 horn gremlins
How do I take the horn button off?
I tried to pry it off but I didn't want to break it. |

Re: 38 horn gremlins
Hi Everyone, I know 36 steering and horn more than others. It sounds like a bent horn rod to me. If not messed with lately, then I'm not helpful.
If you have a bent rod, turning the steering wheel can turn on lights and or toot horn.

Re: 38 horn gremlins
There is no wire in the column, only the rod. The horn button grounds the rod and blows the horn,I think that's how it works. You can't remove the button or the light controls, because their part of the rod and you don't want to pull that! That's where you get into bent rod problems! The problem is is in the light switch contacts! Check the relay before you get into the light switch.

Re: 38 horn gremlins
I always wondered if it was bent. When you turn the wheel you can fell a slight rub or contact.
I don't think it is the relay as turning the wheel will make it stop. |

Re: 38 horn gremlins
There is a wire inside the rod. It is a real pain in the ankle to replace, especially if you can't remove the rod. The wire must be taut to ensure good contact at each end.

Does the rod come out from the top or bottom.
