Default Grinding into 1st

Whenever I'm driving my 1930 coupe about every time I try to go into first it grinds until the gears slow down enough for it to go into gear. Mind you this is at a dead stop. I've tried while waiting on a traffic light to grind it into first then put back into neutral just to see if it will go back to first without grinding. Nope it grinds until the gears inside slow down. Is this normal or is my clutch still making contact while in neutral keeping the gears spinning? And yes I'm running 600W oil.
