Default Engine numbers

I have read that the engine could have been built up to two month, prior to being married to the chassis my question when was the engine # stamp and frame# stamp ,were they stamp when the engine and frame went together or prior to when the car was going down the assemble line thanks for your help in advance.

The engine was stamped when it passed break in. The engine then went to an area waiting for install. Based on original vehicles, it appears the the engines were not always first in and first out or even in order but rather it seems that any engine was pulled to be placed in the vehicle. This seems to be counter to how Ford did things but that is what I have read and fits the 3 month "rule".

The engine was chosen, placed in the vehicle and then the engine number was stamped on the frame for vehicles made in the US.
