I have been taking my car apart for a restoration. Have read about removing springs, not clear, my front frame cross member is cracked so I need to remove the front spring? Also have bad corrosion and need to replace parts that rear spring attaches to. Is there any way to remove the springs without purchasing the special tool? Thanks Dan

i would NOT mess with the rear without the tool.

the front is SO much easier with the tool but not as lethal as the rear.

Lots of there threads here about the dangers of the springs. Do not be a fool read and follow directions .if you don't the life you lose might be yours. And I am not kidding they can kill you in a instant.many years ago I thought I could improvise and take the rear off with out a tool , I was dam lucky I was working under a metal roofed shop and the springs went thru the roof and it was 12 foot high . I had a baseball cap on and it took the bill off like a pair of shears. I was not hurt. Crapped my pants and shook like a leaf for at least a half hour. I was extremely lucky. Learn from a much wiser and older idiot do it right.i was 22 years old and that was 41 years ago and it still scares the hell out me to this day. Get the right TOOLS for this job.

Local model a club may have one you can borrow.

I've only seen one person take off the rear springs without the tool and it was very lucky. The shackle took off like a bullet but luckily didn't hit anyone.

DANGER!! Believe what you have read here - invite a few club members over - A GOOD REASON TO BELONG TO A CLUB - they will have the proper spring spreaders and experience - be cautious and proceed slowly - the rear spring is all that and more that you have read about above. ps enjoy your model A and buy the tools.
