Default Testing Gernerator

My favorite car is a '51 Ford that is bone stock (6 volt positive ground). With the engine running the amp gauge doesn't move one way or the other when rpm's increased. When the head light are turned on it shows a discharge. I would like to test the generator by itself. If memory serves be correctly there is a way to "motor" the generator, without the belt attached, to verify that it is working. How is that done? Any suggestions appreciated.
