what kind of grease gun are you using?

members have posted references within other contexts to this question, but it has never been a fuil-blown thread. So what type of gun are you using, no matter what your fittings are?

Some folks are using the little gun that came with the car but I am wondering if there is a better way. The original gun holds not-so-much lubricant and is somewhat of a pain to fill. Also apparently the gun was designed for some type of semi-liquid lubricant not in general use today, and not designed for mere cup grease or the like.

Standard hand pump cartridge size gun. Change the tip or hose as needed.

I rebuilt and use the grease gun that came with the car. Loading the gun with regular chassis grease and a few pumps at each point is part of the fun of owning one of these things!

Actually I think the opposite.
For wheel bearings, Ford specified an NLGI grade 4 grease in the 1932 Service Bulletins. This grease is firmer than the commonly used NLGI grade 2 multi-purpose grease most everyone uses today for wheel bearings. I believe the NLGI grade 4 was specified to reduce leakage. However today we use better seals allowing the use of thinner NLGI 2 grease which I believe is better for wheel bearings.

This type of gun works good on a lot of the fittings.

The Altemite 6B is the easiest and quickest to use, it only takes 1 hand ---just place tip on the fitting and push

the only drawback is that it has to be hand packed ---but a modern power gun can fill it too

I use my original tool kit grease gun for the Model A. I like a couple brands of older American made grease guns, but I looked on ebay a few weeks ago and the only known American made pistol type grease gun I could find was a Lincoln gun, and the price is $33 with shipping. A couple years ago I bought 2 guns from Menards when they went on sale for $10 each, but they leak grease and make a mess. You can guess where they were made.

'better way', yes, IMO !
I purchased a vendor supplied adaptor for the end of hose on my pneumatic powered Sears grease gun. I can lube the 'old time' ford zerks and then replace the end with modern end and continue to lube any modern zerks in my Model A. I have a combination of both, and have a goal of making all zerks modern. Just my choice, eh

I did see a "new" one at Hershey ---but it was out of the price range I was paying, they wanted 25$, and I had already bought 5 guns at about 2$ each, I have enough to last me, these were the garage mechanics type of gun, they were made in the modern type of fitting too

when looking at one check that the plunger is tight---not much wobble, and that the follower piston inside is not crumbling (some are cork)

I’m looking to buy the small cartridges of grease that I have used for years in my hand grease gun. No one seems to carry them any longer — but maybe I’m not searching for the right thing. Can you tell me the type, or brand, or lubricant you use in your hand grease gun ? This is for the general lubricating of the grease fittings — not the water pump.

I usually use my Lucas Mini Grease gun when under the car (except for the u-joint). It uses the 3 oz. grease cartridges. I use the Lucas 'Red & Tacky' grease.

Lincoln pneumatic and Lucas Red and Tacky, except for the wheel bearing zerks and the water pump. With four A's in the family the air gun saves some time on the lube day production line.
