can anybody tell me if the frame end of the mount is tapered as one on the driver side is tapered and the one on the pass side is not. do I look for a tapered tire mount? ps imean the mounts are tapered the shafts are not.

Yes, the frame end of the side mount tire support is tapered.

I don't believe you can purchase just the arm, it usually comes with the frame mount.
