Now that I have got the engine back in the car,( which went way better than I thought it would!) It is time for exhaust, Is there a certain type or brand of muffler that works well with and sounds good on a flathead? I have headers on the engine and are going to run duel exhaust out the back.

My preference, for mufflers on Flatheads, are Brockman Mellow-Tone Steel Packed. Brockman's will custom make a pair of mufflers for you, depending on the sound, etc. that you want. I don't have their contact info handy but you can Google them.

I think that Smithys sound the best on a flathead. Just my opinion.

Will 22 inch or 26 inch Brockman steel pack mufflers give a mellow but quiet sound?

Bought a pair of 10 dollar Read heads a few years back. Sounds pretty good. Don't forget the size of the pipe is important. No larger than 1 3/4, 2" for racing. Gotta keep the rap.

I agree with Ol' Ron, I love the rap of a Flathead. That's what I told Brockman's I wanted, and they have delivered every time. I've got an original set of Smithy's glass packed mufflers on my '53, installed them in 1987, they are loud and have a nice rap, but they are not as mellow, while cruisin', as the Brockman's.

Where do owners weigh in on dual 26" Porter steel pack mufflers regarding sound level and tone ?. Thinking of them for my 35 P.U. with a 59A engine bored 50 over

Here is another vote for Smithy's. I have had them on my '41 for 17 years. I just love the sound.

I went the other way. When the young man that built the exhaust system for my truck asked what I wanted it to sound like, I told him, "like a BMW motorcycle, I wanted people to see it go by, not hear it". Several of the folks I know call it my stealth truck, it really is that quite. Besides, my hearing is so bad I don't need to hurt it any more than I already have.

I haven't looked inside a Brookman but have looked inside a Smithy, I wouldn't use Smithys, really quite restrictive. Got a bunch of loovres ( can't spell it) punched in, they stick out into the od of the pipe, by quite a bit. Leaves a small flower shaped tube for the exhaust to go through, turn em round and just think what all those forward facing loovers do to flow!
Have a look, not a good idea in my opinion. Martin. |
