How to remove outside door handles 36 Ford Truck
I have looked every where I can think of, but can not find any information on removing the outside door handles on a 35 / 36 Ford Truck. I think it has to do with aligning the handle shaft in a certain way. I have twisted and turned every way I can think of but no luck. Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance

Once the outside screws are remove you tip the handle down to approximately the 4 o'clock position and pull towards you.

Re: How to remove outside door handles 36 Ford Truck
My handle is pointing to the front of the Truck at about 9 O'clock. When I turn the handle down I can only get to about 7. I pulled as hard as i could and nothing happened. As I turned the handle I also tried pulling out at the same time still nothing. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Re: How to remove outside door handles 36 Ford Truck
Just turn the inside handle while holding the outside one steady. Either way will work. The shaft and the holes are square and must be aligned exactly, then pull the outside handle straight out. Piece of cake once you learn how to do it. Reverse to re-install handle.

It;s like Lawson said piece of cake once one comes off and you see how it is made. Just keep shooting oil in the latch keep a pull on the handle while working the handle down about half of the travel and will come off. I had a dickens of a time with mine also, but once off and clean them up it was easy. good luck maybe they have been on a long time and maybe rust and such is causing issue

Thanks Lawson. Turning the inside handle while holding the outside one steady did the trick on the drivers door. I'm still working on the passenger door, but I now feel 50% better.

Re: How to remove outside door handles 36 Ford Truck
Finally got the last one off. Had to cut the handle off and remove the latch mechanism from the door. I could then see how to line up everything. Lined it up and pulled on the
stub of the handle still left in the latch. wouldn't budge. Got a hammer and a punch and persuaded it to come out. after the shaft was out i could see what was holding it. Inside the latch, in the square hole for the handle, there is a tab with four prongs. Each prong rests on the square door handle shaft. (looks like some sort of anti rattle device). The prongs had eaten into the shaft making little indentations. these prongs / indentations were acting like one way teeth holding the shaft from coming out. What an adventure this was. I don't think I would have ever gotten it out without cutting the door handle off and taking it out of the door. Thanks all of you for your help. |
