Doing a sort of inventory on my "extra" PU fenders. Most seem to be scrap metal - portions where they attach to running boards are bad. However, a recent post on '40 pickup fenders mentioned that rear fenders could be adapted using "patch panels". If panels are available, some of my fenders may be usable. Are there patch panels available for 38-39 rear fenders? I've looked at regular sources (Carpenter, Northern, Mac's, C&G) and don't see any.
Can scrap many fenders if can't find panels - too rough to fix. Thanks

I don't know if there are any patches. But I used two rear fenders to make one.
The rear ones I wouldn't scrap. Personally. Someone with some skills can bring them back into shape. Fronts look really bad though. Keep the buckets and all the hardware. The main headlight bolt, that is hollow for the wires, aren't easy to find. Last edited by Tinker; 09-30-2014 at 12:42 PM. Reason: Sp |

I don't know anything about patch panel availability, never seen any. I have found that steel fenders for 39 PU cannot be had off the shelf. Before you scrap yours, would you consider selling them for patch panels for other folks fenders? I have a 39 left rear that is torn at the 12 o'clock position from the lip almost to the bed, straight across the top and it is bent almost everywhere else except where it attaches to the running board. I suppose others are in the the same position, give it some thought. What would you want for a left rear and can you post pictures?

I believe that rear fenders are the same from 1938 to 1941. My 39 front fenders were in real bad shape and I just welded and shaped metal to fill the holes.

Yes, there was a repair panel made for 35-40 rear fenders for the leading end where the fender attaches to the running board. They were made by Engineering and Mfg. Services of Cleveland, Ohio the phone number back then was 216-446-1620. They are a very nice patch panel made of 16 gauge with the rolled edge, reinforcing plate for the running board bolts, and a crimp to avoid oil canning. They are about a foot wide, 11 and 1/2 inches tall, and are roughly about 5 inches wide at the bend. I think the company that makes them now is called EMS and I believe they make hot rod parts as well. Hope this helps. Toby Lampert

I have looked at EMS's stuff but didn't see them - I'll check again. I'm reluctant to sell anything in this mess. Be ashamed to sell the dents, dings, tears.. Tinker, I'll save stuff for patches. Any Barner can have pieces for shipping costs. Seems to me though, that these old pickups always failed in the same spots - 12:00 cracks and front and back end rust or tears, so maybe nothing useful. Somehow I ended up with six rear driver's fenders, and only two rear pass fenders. I have two trucks and want to use a good 49 3/4" bed I have to build a trailer, so guess I'll be lookin' for one rear pass side fender. Sofaking, Looks like I may have one extra serviceable driver's side fender. I'll get a photo when I get a chance, but I suspect it's no better than what you have. Also depends on whether I can find patch pieces or not - if not, I may need the front of it. Want you to understand though, person would have to hammer and dolly 'bout every bit of any of these. V12Bill, I've done fenders that way - lot of work for me of limited skill! My Dad told me it looked like I was making fenders out of welding wire. Sorta like 3D printing I guess. Thanks all, Gordon

I agree these rear fenders split the lip around the 12 o'clock area. Maybe it's why you see a lot of old work trucks with the fender "strap" in back. The rear passenger fenders are more coveted with the spare indent. Great hoarder collection ![]() . Last edited by Tinker; 10-01-2014 at 10:19 AM. Reason: sp |

I would not scrap those fenders unless it is absolutely necessary. I have fixed fenders worse than those by piecing them together. It might take 3 or 4 fenders to make one good one but it can be done. People are always looking for a section to repair their damaged fender. They are not making them anymore
