How are your levels? Ie: Oil, Transmission, Rear Axle. Could you tell where the noise was coming from? Do you have an oil pressure gauge? How were your temps?

Are you sure it's not spark knock, timing to far advance? Is the engine new or have a lot of miles? Walt

could the noise be the parking brake band rubbing the drum? small spring is suppossed to hold it off but could need adjusting-reason you are hearing it at high speed could be when it is dragging enough to make the noise ,just a thought

noises or pinging on up hill pulls usually means a lean carb mixture, or timing advanced to much, a ping will sound like a sharp rattle, it happens on throttle opening on hills, more things will cause that noise, but those two are the main ones

Your description sounds like too much initial timing or a seized vacuum brake. My vote is a seized vacuum brake. The vacuum brake slows the timing under load. The vac brake assembly is on the other side of the distributor in the picture. For starters, remove the brake assembly and clean it. The large hex will remove it. Relubricate it with a light grease like Vaseline. If there is groove in the leather pad. Remove it from the piston. Turn it 90 degrees and reinstall it.
