Default Pinion Removal

Took apart my first banjo rear end. It appears the pinion comes out the front, but the bearing race seems to be pretty well frozen in place. Am I correct in assuming this, and should I apply heat to free the race?
Thanks, Fred

That outer bearing race is press fitted into the banjo housing. Applying some heat around the housing where the bearing is located will help when pressing that pinion and bearing assembly out of the banjo housing. Ten years ago I made a tool to press those pinions out, but lately I have found a better/easier way of pressing them out with my hydraulic shop press.

Hello Everyone,

Fredb, There are great suggestions and good reading in the above links.

As always vanpeltsales.com has great diagrams, here's the link to the one showing the 32-37 rear, maybe that will help too. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/F...y_1932to37.jpg

Fred,
I would suggest reinstalling the outer Timken and nut to stabilize things
prior to heating the housing. Removing the pinion can be fairly easy or a real trial
depending on how much press is involved.....we are talking a couple tenths of a
thousands here between easy and not easy. Looking at the video gives you an idea
of what kind of a puller you'll need to come up with to facilitate removal. In nearly
every case heat is required.
