Does the fan used in the trucks [ wide ] move more air then the one used in cars [thin & pointed]? my '49 F-1 239 has the latter, should I change as I overheat

If you can find the 6 bladed fan and hub for your engine, you should get one. I put that set up on the 8ba in my '36 pick up and it moves tons of air. Some complain that these fans are noisy, but I have not noticed any extra noise. If you get the hub, do a search on here for how to fill it with oil.

If you don't have a shroud, install one. They work wonders.

I suspect you have other trouble. I'm running a Car EAB in my F-1 with the car's 3-blade fan. I've driven it in 105 deg weather, does not run more than half a needle width hotter than in the winter. I have a shroud (thank you, 4TFord!), all the air deflectors, and my block is very clean. Radiator rodded out and cleaned. Stock water pumps.
Not sure what you mean by "thin and pointed"? This is the Car fan I have. Do you mean thin belts?

I run a down graded radiator ,Some people say Why? for testing purposes !It will run 10 to 15 Deg cooler specially at the lights when its most needed .Also its been suggested that the fan is not needed on the freeway .While road testing a 32 coil with the fan removed I found the Tempt started to clime ,I think the radiator design has some barring on how cool it will run ,In the day Ford have several radiator options available .Some people opt for high flow water pumps ,Ted

As far as I know, Tony; I have another just like it that is off an engine from a '50 shoebox Ford. AFAIK all the narrow-belt cars used them.

Would a truck fan fit a car with a 59 engine?

There were trucks with 59 engines, Ford made many different fans for different applications, they mostly mounted to the same place, I used a 49 merc generator and the 59 engine original truck fan when I put the 49 merc in the truck
Most likely if the overheating occurs over 40 mph it isn't the fan's fault |

I'm with Kurt, I have an 8BA hi-flow pumps with a Crab dist ( just like the look) and only had room for a small 4 blade fan from the smaller 136ci flathead ( 60 HP version ) mounted on my alternator and thought it was the fan and didn't believe all the advise saying it wasn't the fan which was giving me the cooling issues. Did all the suggestions, retarded the timing a bit, re-torqued the head bolts, and most of all put a shroud on. The little sucker works fine now. Never run over 170 degrees. I know it's controversial but I run with no stats as I don't run it in winter and I think that helps too.

This is a '49 wide belt, the blade is approx 2"wide & the end/top of blade comes to a point, the truck fan is approx. 3 " wide & is blunt/flat @ the top/end.

Fred, can you post a picture of it? It doesn't sound stock to me.

Merc (8CM) fan with narrow belts is sometimes different to that three blade on in Ross' pic. Three blade fan is I believe integral with the pully, I have that Merc narrow belt pulleys in my truck, the fan bolts to a cast sort of conical pully with windows in it. I don't have the Merc fan ( couldn't scurry one up) so it has a redrilled 42 type four blade fan. This has the square cut ends. I have seen a pic of a four blade with sort of pointy ends, I'd say elliptical shaped on a flathead (would this be the Merc one?), but know nothing about it.
Did the F1 come with a shroud? The 42-47 did from the factory. Martin. |

Martin, I've seen the Merc 4-blade with that cast hub. It didn't occur to me that the fan blade would be separate on those, but it must be if the hub is cast. Can't you just use any aftermarket fan with that?
Yes, F-1's came with shrouds, but they got thrown away many times. They make things very tight up front. So did you have to press the narrow sheaves onto truck type WP's? Isn't that a treat?! I think if my WP's ever fail, I will convert to truck belts rather than deal with that again.

Don't know about aftermarket fans, I had a couple of the 59A fans here so used one of them. Rather than bying something else.
And yes its got 8RT truck pumps with 8CM pulleys. Again it's what I had already in my pile of parts. If I had an 8RT bottom pulley, I'd have used this with stock 8RT pumps. I got this setup on the truck as I use it to test my converted sbc distributors. Martin |

I solved the cooling problem when driving my '34 Ford woody, but still have it when idling in parades even here in Vermont. Does anyone know where I could get a 6 bladed fan or shroud?
