Default Hello All, newbie needing some basic help...

Hi All,

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday!

So, Im starting heavy into a project my Pops and I have been tinkering with slowly for, well, decades now... We really want to get it running and have it be a frequent use vehicle, so working towards reliability versus restoration project. We want use it!

He bought the car in Argentina, engine # A790283. It's a right hand steer, so kinda an odd animal. Not even sure if it is considered a 28 or 29, or what model is. No body plate to be found anywhere...

Currently, I have a question on the running boards. We've taken them off, stripped the old rubber off, ground off some rust from the frames, repainted, and ready to re-rubber. Any suggestions on how? Contact cement? Marine caulking?

Thanks for the help, and thanks for all the many dozen future questions as well...

Rudy

Contact cement, just like installing formica counter tops.

Welcome, glad you joined us.

I used 3M contact cement.
Starting the project is a daunting experience. I broke the restoration into sections. I did the front end, The rear end, chassis, tranny. Breaking the project up made it so much easer for me, and I had better utilization of space. Once I finished a section, it was placed in storage and I could put my full consideration to the next section.
The Diablo Model A's have made many videos, you can get them through there site, or through one of the MAFCA https://mafca.com/cart/index.php?show_price=yes
They are great. You will also need Less Andrews books on rebuilding and troubleshooting https://mafca.com/cart/index.php?productID=166 and https://mafca.com/cart/index.php?productID=168
Best of luck Post some photos, and we will tell you what you have. Most any parts books have a set of photos of the different body styles. If you look closely at the left wall of the gas tank (under the hood) you will often see a date of manufacture.
Keep in touch

Also, as you are rebuilding, consider changing to Flathead Teds Brake floated system, it really works great.

Welcome, your car is awesome. It would save you a thousand hours of effort if you'd join a local club. Take for instance the Gold Coast Chapter of the Model A Restorers Club in Pompano Beach, Fl. They are friendly, helpful and have lots of expertise in all, all things Model A. Many Model A'ers consider this hobby as a brotherhood. There may be a club closer so I don't mean to step on the wrong running board.

There is a MAFCA club in Miami and we are just up the road in FT Lauderdale/Hollywood.

Thanks all for the replies! I found various options for contact cement on all the usual suppliers.

I am going to look up my local club, and thanks for the offer Rusty - will definitely reach out.

Next is to tackle that rusty fuel tank... should be interesting!
