How to remove rear seat on a 1930 Roadster
I have a 1930 roadster and need to remove the back seat to have the springs shortened to get more let room.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

Re: How to remove rear seat on a 1930 Roadster
If you are talking about the standard roadster like mine, you have to pull straight up on the back part that attaches to the lid. The back cushion has two clips that fit into a slot in the top of the lid and then when you push the cushion straight down toward the ground these clips tighten it against the lid as it moves down. Once these are cleared of the lid, the back comes right out. Then the seat bottom cushion can be removed.

I read this as the back of the forward compartment seat, more leg room for driver and passenger, if like the seat in the 28-29, the back of the seat is not removable without dismantling your interior.

Re: How to remove rear seat on a 1930 Roadster
There are nuts where the three studs along the bottom come through "L" brackets.
If the package tray was assembled correctly (often not) you remove four #10-32 screw that go down from the top and are nutted on the underside of the package tray. Most cars have the package tray bottom covered in one piece so it can't be separated. In this case you need to get up inside and remove the five(?) wood screws that are installed horizontally holding the front lip of the package tray to the wood frame. Also, some folks incorrectly install the cardboard on the back of the seat after installation in which case it must come off before removal.

The 28 and the 29 are different than the 30 and 31 and should be able to come out and yes it is the back rest for the front seat

Re: How to remove rear seat on a 1930 Roadster
I'm 6'6" tall, pants inseam 36 and shoe size 13, so I need all the room I can get in a Model A.
Simply by removing the vinyl-covered cardboard on the package shelf, and moving the seat back on the bottom about 2 inches back and the seat back on the top back to the metal, I was able to get super comfortable without having to cut anything. If I wanted to get even more room, I would cut away about 1 inch of the package tray's metal, and get the back rest thinner, as you proposed, by changing the springs. Not really needed, unless you are 7-feet tall. |

You're never too tall for a Model A.
