Default 226 Fan/Alternator hitting each other

Is anyone running a ford 226 flathead? I have a 51 226 in my 51 F3 i added an alternator but the fan really close to hitting the alternator. I thinking on making a aluminum spacer for the fan but wanted to see if there were any work around that y'all have already found.

I used washers between the fan and pulley because the fan was too close to the fan belt. See pic of my setup.

If it's "close to hitting the alternator" and not hitting the alternator, what's the problem?
And if it worries you, do what needs to be done to eliminate the worry.
Then you can advise others as to what you did.

That alternator appears to be mounted too far rearward, as the belt seems to be meeting the alt pulley at an angle. That could easily throw the belt, if I'm seeing this correctly. DD

Might be the wrong fan, V8 maybe. Belts look out of alignment.

My setup has been working for almost 10 years without throwing or wearing out a belt. The alignment is a tad off. It was the best a guy could do without any product available for the 226 6.

Looks like the alternator is mounted to far FORWARD. This makes the
belt look like it's back to far. The alternator belt seems to line up with
the crank shaft pulley. G.M.

Toby,
Did you make the bracket yourself? I have a 226 and am going to put an alternator on it. I found a bracket kit, but I am not into it. I was wondering what else is out there.

I originally made my own bracket before one was available. This bracket is from the Mac's kit. The bracket is similar to one for an alternator conversion for an 8/9N Ford Tractor. The arm to keep tension on the alternator is a generic alternator bracket.

Look at the bolt on the bottom front of the alternator, that don't
look forward compared to the top?? G.M.

Don't you want the belt pulleys to line up, not the bolts? The alternator appears to be mounted considerably aft of where it needs to be to get the pulleys aligned. Believe the OPer stated he is aware it is mounted too far aft, but did it for additional fan clearance and he has not had a problem with belts being thrown off.

Thanks for all of your concerns. Please don't over-engineer this thing. It's working. I will take a look at it this spring (car is in storage) and see if it can be aligned better.

Wow, I hate to bring this up, but...............the more I look at the angle of the top of the block's deck where it meets the head, and then compare that angle with the way the alternator is sitting, it looks like the nose (pulley) of the alternator is also twisted somewhat toward the right (passenger) side of the vehicle. Look closely and you'll realize that we're seeing this engine from a slight FRONT angle.....not straight-on from the side. DD
