I picked up an old gas cap. It was advertised as an Eaton.
There are no Eaton markings on the inside. Did Eaton make them without adding their markings? |

Rusted away. Looks like they would have to pay royalties if it isn't.

The direct answer, which is helpful in future searches of the forum:
The picture shows an original Eaton gas cap. This is because of the vent holes and a side profile would show a height of about 1/2”. |

Dissolve the rust (Evaporust) and you may be able to see some traces of the printing with a magnifying glass. This view looks like an Eaton cap. A side view would help.

My cap is rustier than this one
![]() Is it better to use Evaporust and clean it up? Or buy a new reproduction cap? |

Evaporust, followed by some pickin' to make sure the vent holes are open, would be my suggestion. BTW, Evaporust says that you can immerse for minutes to hours, I have not found that effective, I go overnight on almost all things.

I have soaked it in Evaporust. It removed all the rust but there is no trace of any markings.

Can these caps be disassembled to work out dents in the top and then re-assembled?
