I’m looking for 7.00-16 bias ply tires to put on the rear of my 32 for a reasonable budget.
I really like the look of the Firestone deluxe champion or Bf Goodrich Silvertown but they are really expensive, especially in Europe. I red some guys use light truck or trailer tires. I found the Nankang NR066 or Taifa TP001. What did you fit on yours ? |

if you can access a Walmart- buy the trailer tires there. I put 15" trailer tires on my 1965 corvette and they look pretty good. I know walmart closed down in Germany, so I have no idea if you have them in Belgium?

What disadvantage (if any) of running trailer tires on a car? I would expect they would ride a little harder, but I could live with that if they looked ok. For certain older sizes, that's sometimes all you can find online.
Anybody know? |

Trailer tires are probably not designed to stand the torque of accelerating and breaking, but if you don’t have a high performance car, it will not be a problem

I paid 55. each for mine from Walmart, for 15's. I believe they have a thicker sidewall
then a reg tire, and therefore, should last a good long time. my corvette will hardly be driven, let alone beat on. they are fine by me and give me "the look" wo spending 250. per tire. Im cheap too. dont feel bad........... |

Now I'm intrigued. Here is a 7.50 X 16" tire for about 1/2 of the price of Coker. I'd like to see one before I'd say they look close to a Coker made Firestone.

I think some if not all trailer tires are labeled for trailer use only. Your insurance company may quarrel with you if there is injury/property damage due to a tire on a vehicle that is clearly labeled for trailer use only. Ymmv

Brakes and tires are important safety features, I would get the opinion of a reputable tire shop on mounting trailer tires on your classic vehicle.

You wouldn't want 10 ply tyres on a car. You wouldn't want 'em on a truck either (1/2 ton type)

I have Excelsior 6.50-16 on my '36, see this old post of mine:
https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=326506 I continue to be very happy with these, pretty much identical to the Coker Firestone bias ply tires I was using before and much cheaper. I see them still listed on Summit and Jegs at $135, seems availability is intermittent. Not 7.00-16 and not in Belgium, but I think a good alternative in the U.S. Adam

Most reasonably priced trailer tires that I checked out seemed to be 6-ply, not 10. Some say 6-ply rated, whatever that means.

Rated 6 ply means it has virtually the strength and flex of a 6 ply tire. Look up the word virtually if you think you know its meaning.

Diamond Back tires in their early years sold truck tires for classic cars. I have a set on 46 rims that have no sidewalk markings (the hot rod guys like that like me) and wear like iron. But, 6-ply tires are made for trucks and your ride will be affected. They do wear much better than classic tires that’s for sure …. I tend to run them a little soft for a better ride.
Presently Maxxis (sp?) makes the old Austone British taxicab tire - not cheap but they wear much better than a classic car tire and figuring the cost per mile, they are worth the extra money ….

No need to be concerned or confused about the term ply-rated. That has been around for decades. I remember seeing an even number followered by PR on tires of long-parked vehicles when I was a kid.

I've run 6 ply rated tyres on my lightweight roadster ever since I built it. They are ok but it is not built for comfort.
It is worth mentioning that the original poster Harold is not in the USA so directing him to WalMart is not particularly relevant. |

The Firestone in Europe cost 400€/ea !
I found two other tires, they are radial and not bias ply but are 12ply. https://www.centralepneus.be/pneu-au.../?orderby=prix |

Sidewall thickness isn't going to play a roll in longevity. As stated by others, trailer tires are designed for load capacity, hence the thicker sidewall. They aren't designed for power transfer (acceleration or braking) or handling (both wet and dry or at varying temperatures and speeds), hence the thicker sidewall and different tread shape. Most trailer tires are also only rated for 75 mph. That's freeway speed (or slower) in most states. They don't belong on a passenger car.

The Maxxis tire was made in Taiwan and had a better reputation than most of the Chinese may pops in the rv world. My trailer came with some no name Chinese tires, sun was only on them the short distances we traveled, covered the rest of the time. Couple thousand miles and 5 years later big bulges from the sidewalls. They were not overloaded, they just have a 5 year life.
