When I had Austin Healey's a guy that I helped would call me ever few weeks and start off with, "It was running the best it ever ran and then I........." You fill in the blank. It often started with a screw driver and ended up with a crescent wrench before going to a work bench and then calling me. If it is the best it ever ran, that may be as good as it gets. Someplace you have to say, "That is good enough for who it is for," even if it's yourself it is good enough for, right?

Yeah and as they say engines run the best and are really loose right before they expire…

Half the time of my head gasket job was drilling out and tapping threads on the rear most drivers side head stud. The bolts looked decent but where it broke there was a ring of black an 1/8 inch into the stud diameter. a very time consuming mistake that was remedied by a 20$ stud kit.
I've been soaking all the head bolts in Kroil all week and finally re-torqued all the head bolt nuts tonight to the 55 ft lbs they are supposed to be and I found a few to be pretty loose so that might help the gasket seepage I'm guessing.

The exhaust was leaking at the collector and my wife and baby will be riding in the car and we don't want either of them to pass out...

First 2017 Short Run of our 1931 Ford

Was something like 5 degrees above zero Fahrenheit here today in the bleak hinterland of Pennsylvania's northeast corner. That 31' Ford has been sitting forlorn out in the cold garage since before Halloween time of last year.

Went out there to the workbench to fetch a screwdriver and found myself instead headed towards the Model A Ford. On the way past, the button was hit and garage door opened. Hopping into the car, as routine, I gave an upward left hand heel hit to the spark lever into full retard position. Pulled the fuel lever down just a little, turned the key to ON, hit the starter button while tugging the choke a couple of times. The starter groaned with the engine at once sputtered to life. Notched the spark lever down 6 or so clicks and gave the Marvel-Schebler carburetor a nice blast of gasoline. Once running, the engine smoothed out to an idle and the automobile was backed out of the garage. With the ancient Ford percolating in the driveway, the emergency brake got set and I slipped into the house so to get warm. Fifteen minutes later, came back outside, jumped into the car and rolled down the longer driveway. By then, with fuel flow idled down, the four banger engine was running oh so very smooth. By the time the car had rolled down into the small valley below, had realized that I'd forgotten to bring gloves.

Navigated around the hilly residential circle roadway twice making it a total driving distance of 1.3 miles. Figure that it would be good for the car to have that cold greasy goop stuff and lubricant juices moving around in all those places inside. Rolled back to the home driveway and drove directly into the garage. Perhaps in a few weeks time, we'll give the old girl another fast start and easy run around the block.

Whenever around any of these cars, it never fails to remind me how excellent a product was the Model A Ford. For the past half century, I have personally owned several of these cars. They are reliable, easy to operate and simple to fix. Without compromise, these rugged automobiles faithfully serve us and continue to obediently operate decade after decade.

Very cool! I am looking forward to years to come of those stories as well.
