The car is finally running good!

Best she's ever run! Got the timing set just about perfect as far as I can tell and it's idling nice.

Still puffing out a bit of blue smoke. I set the fuel mixture on the Tillotson about where it needs to be.
Maybe it just needs to run a while to burn off some of the 30+ year oil in the cylinders?

Made one of those home made test lights just like that years ago, and still use it some times. Glad you got it running fine.

Well good.

Who told you to pull the spark lever down and advance the timing a little when you first cranked it up? That will work fine if you don't go too far but it's not a good habit. The Model A is supposed to be fully retarded with the spark lever all the way up when cranking.

It was warm already. It had been running for 10 mins or so when I shut of off and re-cranked it.

Where do you run yours?

I push the lever all the way up when cranking as Ford intended. At that position the number 1 cylinder will receive the spark at Top Dead Center on the compression stroke and the other cylinders will follow accordingly if the timing has been set correctly. If you pull the lever down and advance the timing too much, the engine will labor to crank and if you advance the timing too far, the engine will kick back and bend the starter shaft.

Ok thanks! I am still learning and I'm sure I'll be learning from you guys for years to come.
I do ALWAYS start it in the full retard position.

Didn't look like it in your short video. You pulled the lever down, some. That's why I made a comment about the proper position of the lever for starting.

I would hope that you have other model a owners nearby you can learn from.
As you learn from them you will be able to improve the way your motor runs.
I think the motor can be more responsive than I saw from the youtube.
At the very least now you can put some local miles on the car and enjoy driving it.

Re: The car is finally running good!

Another bit of info I would like to add is one can often tell a lot about the condition of an engine just by listening to the sound the starter makes as it turns the engine over. Yours has an even rhythm or regular repeated pattern of sound. That indicates fairly even compression from one cylinder to the next, which is a good sign. However, yours also sounds like the starter is spinning the engine over a little fast (just a little not much) in my opinion which can indicate lower compression in all cylinders, like a worn engine with a lot miles, as the engine has less compression and is easier to turn over. Plus the fact that you said the engine was warm adds to the accuracy of my opinion. Could still be a good runner though.

re-read #12.
Spark lever always fully UP to start, hot or cold

else can bend starter shaft.

make it a practice, when you shut off the car, push both levers all the way up. It will become habit

choke not needed at all when warm/hot

That I do push both levers all the way up and turn the gas off then shut off the ignition.

I'm still trying to find someone in my area that has an A.
Big car show coming up in my town in a few weeks and the Model A club attends usually. Quite a bit of brass cars as well.
