Zeke3 may be on to sumpthin, I know the earlier ford solenoids will stick when mounted upside down. It seems they need gravity to help the spring unload the connection

When I correct the solenoid do I need to do anything with the wires or just rotate it 180 and put it back on?

Sorry I'm ate to the party, But welcome and that is way too nice of a truck to go into yard art jail. As to you last question no , you can just disconect the wires turn the noid over and reatatch the wres to the new terminal that's now on that side. Again welcome. Tim

I will try to post a video.

Today I took all the spark plugs out. All the cylinders have some compression and all the spark plugs spark. I double-checked that again. I did that during the summer when I bought the truck.
It sounds loke the engine trys to fire, and the engine kicks out the starter bendex. with the starter drive kicked out the starter will spin very fast it has no load on it, it will not stop intill you take your finger off the starter button. The starter will opperate eaven with the key off

Yes that does sound like what I have experienced. So chances are it is the bendix problem in your opinion?

I watched your video , so when you turn off the ignition switch, will the starter stop spinning? when you turn on the ignition switch will it crank? the ignition switch is opperated by a key , when you turn it to the left it turns on power to the coil and opperates the gauges. then the starter button is on the right side of the strearing wheel. can you read a wireing diagram? i wonder if the wire that opperates the starter solenoid is hooked to the coil side of your ignition switch. dose your ignition switch opperate like a modren car, turn to the right , first ckick would be on, power to the coil, then one more turn to crank, hope this helps,

Brendan

The gauges are not hooked up or partially hooked up. I will take a picture when I get home. The ignition switch is like you describe but does not snap back when released like a modern car.

There was a time that I turned the key off and the starter was still running.

side of the solenoid termanl , the starter will operate , and after you disconect ,it will stop i hope this is not to much

Do I need to take into account that the engine was swapped to a v8 from 6 and the battery is on the driver's side? Or just hook the wires up as the diagram shows and run the wires to the connections? I am sorry for my lack of knowledge. I really do appreciate the help.

i think if your truck is a 49 the battery is on the driver side, don't be sorry for lack of knowlege. its all learning experiences we all have to learne sometime, wireing is very confusing for some people , Just keep the smoke in the wires...LOL

Brendan, that's easy for you to say, but I've got scars on my fingers from trying to do exactly that.

I flipped the starter solenoid and cleaned all the connections. I will attempt to start it today.

Kind of bummed. It did the same thing. Cranked sounded like it tried to turn over but everything stopped and left the starter engaged and running.

My guess is that you have a weak battery. With a weak battery the solenoid will rapidly cycle and then the points weld together, keeping the starter motoring away. Check the voltage after charging the battery and when cranking or better yet, get it load tested.
