I'm 83, but one of our club members is 94, the same age as his Cabrolet.

When I meet someone older than me I often ask what the first car was that they remember riding in. It often opens up lots of fascinating memories. Nowadays the answer is often something from the Big Three. Back in the 1980s I was living in Boston, and several people mentioned the first family car they could recall was a Terraplane.

We have two members of our club that celebrated 100 year birthdays in the last several months (now that I think of it, one may be 101!). One of them, we featured his car as the cover for our annual published roster. Both are still quite active.

When I went through driver training in the late 60's we had a quite poor simulator for manual transmission, but no real behind-the-wheel time in one. I learned to drive a clutch on a Model A. My son had an early 1990's Toyota pickup for years, he said that the manual transmission was probably the best deterrent for getting it stolen he ever had. (Well, that and his 70 lb pit bull that stayed in the cab when he went on errands...) I never had a car with an automatic transmission until 1993, never had a pickup with one until 2003.

FWIW, my Dad, born in 1913, told me that when he started driving in Indiana that a drivers license wasn't required.

I've enjoyed reading all these posts! While 1 of my A's have been in the family since I was a year old that still was only 62 years ago. I feel like a newborn in this thread..... lol Maybe I'll get to brag how old I am one of these days!
