High gear

Have a 27 T that seems to take to long to go into high gear,like it's sliping or something,what would be the cause of this ?

Just that - the clutch plates are slipping. Could be as simple as an adjustment of the three clutch adjustment fingers (most likely) or worst case scenario, a clutch spring failure.

About 25 years ago when I first got my '22 roadster someone told me to use a quart of MMO in the oil. When I did this the clutch slipped so badly that I could hardly drive it. I drained the oil and filled it with straight 30 weight and it hasn't slipped since.

Just checking, when you throw it in high. do you shut the gas valve? I always do, momentarily cutting the power allows the plates to get a grip. Then gas on to resume acceleration.

Not to be rude,haven't driven a T that much,haven't tried letting off the gas when shifting,but will when we get the engine back in .Found the clutch out of adjustment,thanks for the help, Bill

Before you open the inspection cover to go about adjusting the clutch fingers, be sure the clutch lever/emergency brake lever is actually going all the way forward, to allow the cam on the cross shaft to clear the lever bolt. Sometimes a floorboard will slip, or brake rods will hinder that lever, which can keep the clutch from fully engaging.

Next time that you drive the Model A, leave it floored when you shift it. The Model T is a fragile old lady; do the low gear, close the throttle, then nice and easy let up on the low peddle. Give the clutch a chance to grab. Its a 12 disc wet clutch and needs to squeeze some of the oil out to work. Rollingat 25 mph open it up (WOT) and if the clutch slips then, adjust the 3 fingers inside. The single clutch spring is only about 100 psi of pressure.
Read the book on that part, especially about dropping cotter pins into the abyss. A half turn on each will probably be enough. ws

Just saw yer a nuke guy... I ran coal fired steam turbines (little guys; 500MgWs) and GE aero deriv. gas turbines for ComEd in Chitcawgo... started as a mech/welder too. Youll master that model T after 10 minutes. I don't glow, just have black lung LOL... ws
