You can leave the insulators, but it only takes a minute to switch them.
To test the generator just take a voltage reading at the output stud with the engine running at fast idle. It should be more than battery voltage with the engine off. A quick easy check at night is to shine the lights on the garage door, then with the engine at fast idle, turn the key off. If the headlamps dim slightly as the engine quits then you know the generator was working.
