I don't think That it's useable, but I'm no expert. Why not run it and use an electric pump? |

Re: camshaft would you use it?
I have about 36 cams I am sorting and cleaning. Don't want to scrap anything useable.

Re: camshaft would you use it?
I would talk to a cam grinder. They may be able to clean it up.

Re: camshaft would you use it?
I wouldn't use it, with those pits its only going to get worse, and I don't like the thought of those pits going under the push rod, nothing good can happen

Re: camshaft would you use it?
The motor was seized and pits from rust where push rod sat. Low spots not high spots.

Re: camshaft would you use it?
ok, a hole or a crater, it doesn't matter, its rough there, when you run over a pot hole what happens? its rough, multi ply that by about 2000 times a minute and what do you think is going to happen

Re: camshaft would you use it?
The end of the push rod is far bigger than any of the pits. It will slide right over for many moons. Nothing bad is going to happen.

Re: camshaft would you use it?
Here's another thought:
Stock cams are cheap. No one in their right mind will give you .10¢ for this one. You say you have 36 of them? Make it 35. Those pits are far below the hardened surface of that cam lobe and in service, that area will denigrate quickly.

The core is the same hardness all the way through. |

Re: camshaft would you use it?
Camshafts are hardened all the way through? Wow! That's a new one on me.

Re: camshaft would you use it?
those pits are going to do nothing but get bigger and deeper, would you run a crank with those pits in it? look what happens to lifters when run against a pitted or worn cam lobe,

That link does not work here. "Camshafts are hardened all the way through? Wow! That's a new one on me." You learn something new every day. If you had ground as many flathead Ford V8 cams as I have you would know about this. While there may be a very small (1/8 dia) core in the middle that is softer (not dead soft), it is essentially the same all the way through. Also, don't assume ALL cams are like this. They are not. There are several methods used to heat treat them depending on material and application. "Been in the cam business 60 years" |

Re: camshaft would you use it?
What is the load on that push rod? Fuel pump pressure is around 3 lb, so not much. Comparing this to a crankshaft or cam lobe is a little silly. I'd trust Pete's judgement.
