Re: How many flatheads were produced??
Were the Aussie flatheads cast there, or in Canada. Don't forget the Simca. I read once where it was cast in SA after it was used in Europe.
Talk about a loaded question, this is worse than "how high is up"? |

Re: How many flatheads were produced??
Australian mechanicals came from Canada. I have a book somewhere that might have some historical numbers on that.
During various spans of time flatheads were actually made in USA Rouge, Canada,England Germany, and maybe France as Ford engines. France later made 6o's and big engines as non-Ford engines too. For production Fords, I think the above are the only sources, all other Ford plants were assembly plants using motors supplied by the above factories. |

Re: How many flatheads were produced??
I've read there were about 3.5 millioin 49-51 shoebox fords made approximately half V8. Interesting the same article said Ford was not going to produce the V8 after WW2 for Ford passenger cars because the performance of the 6 was very close, became a marketing decision over ruling the engineers

The war years have always been kind of a mystery except for those that might have done the research. Most of the USA produced military vehicles I've seen from that era are either small jeeps (many made by Ford), larger Dodge type ambulances & wepons carriers, or the larger 4 or 6 wheel drive trucks that were made by a number of motor companies. Many of the big trucks & half tracks had flathead 6 engines from Hercules, GMC, Leroi, White, and many others. I'm still currious what all Ford might have made in that time frame that had flathead V8 engines. Canada and even the Axis powers produced a lot of V8 powered trucks & gun carriers but the USA I don't know. Last edited by rotorwrench; 07-17-2014 at 05:59 PM. |

Also in Canada the new Fords still had flat heads in 1954. Jack.
