Good suggestion about the thickness of the oil. Also, you mentioned that you live in SoCal where there are many Model Aers. If you give a more precise area, probably someone would be willing to meet you and give a demo on driving/shifting. A few minutes face to face you'll learn far more than you ever could trying to understand it here. Armed with that start you can really have fun expanding you abilities doing higher speed downshifts, etc. Part of the fun of driving an 80 year old car! Joining most local Model A clubs also a great way to find a wealth of info on all aspects of your car. You might even meet some nice people that share your interest although can't guarantee that!
