Thank you, now can someone guide me on how to set the timing on this little bugger?

jeff

It stays lit for a little bit but pops and farts a bit then dies. If I keep the choke on it seems to run better.

Without much to go on, I suspect the issue is related to fuel.

I took the carb off and blew air throughout and resurfaced the intake and exhaust manifold. It pops which seems like timing and when I manually advance the timing at the steering wheel it pops and farts.

There is a lot of gunk in the tank so i wouldn't be surprised if some got through.

I bought this car specifically for myself and 5 year old daughter to roam the streets in.

I originally thought about hot rodding but have decided this car is WAY too nice to mess with. I just worry about the brakes so I'll need to get it driving first to see how bad they really are. I've never driven with mechanical brakes and have only heard bad about them.

I'm a purist at heart and a racer second.

Everything seems fine on the car but it still has an exhaust leak with the old gasket so I will order a new one and wait by the mailbox.

My 28 Phaeton and 29 Tudor were both thought of as possible hot rod projects, but thankfully both owners had the good sense to realize they were too good to chop and decided to offer them for sale to be kept original. If they didn't sell, then the hot rod project may have happened.

Mechanical brakes are excellent, and you won't have to worry about leaking hoses, master cylinder and wheel cylinders, or frozen master cylinder and wheel cylinders.

It only takes a little screwup by someone to keep mechanical brakes from stopping correctly, but when done right, they will lock the wheels. There are several threads here about checking and fixing the brakes. The SERVICE BULLETINS has a lot of good information about the brakes.

There is a shop in San Dimas on Bonita. Very well stocked and very helpful. Owned by a guy named McGrath I think. I stop there whenever I am in LA.

They don't carry top of the line parts but for gaskets they are ok.

It looks like someone added a electric wiper motor and hacked the top of the windshield frame.

Does anyone have an accurate picture of stock wiper so I can start my shopping list?

I have a bone head question for the model A guys:

I noticed the intake manifold studs have brass fine thread nuts that hold the intake/exhaust in place, is that a stock thing or did someone just use what they had lying around?

Marco has some drawings of the different winshield hinges on his website. The electric wiper was mounted on the outside and the power terminal and switch knob came though holes to the inside. I don't have any pictures though.

If you use the search feature on this site you might also turn up Marco's drawings. Just enter "windshield hinge" in the search box and see what turns up.

I was on the Hamb earlier and happened to see your post over there. I hope you take your time and learn a little more about Model A's before you make any hasty decisions. Sounds like you need to study up on motors and brakes a little more. Mechanicals work fine when done properly. And their not that hard to correct. Model A's aren't for everybody. Some times people need to buy one that is already altered to suit their needs. Good luck what ever you decide.

I bought it to build a hot rod but I just can't do it to this car, she will stay stock for now.

I'm going to get it in it's working order and enjoy it as is.

I definitely need to learn A LOT about what makes these cars tick.

The original manifold nuts were steel and had concave thick washers under them. The concave part faces the block, and don't be concerned with any specific torque value for the nuts. Just use common sense and have them well snugged, not armstrong tight. I've seen some manifolds with broken clamping ears because someone didn't clamp things correctly, or used too much force.
