I'm in Barrington,NJ. The temp here was 2 degrees this morning, and as of now is 10 degrees. In the garage, where the A rests, it's 26 so I hung a drop light with a 100w bulb in the engine compartment. Later I will put a charger on the battery to buy a few days from that freezing. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate winter...LOL.

"SERIOUSLY, I can't even imagine what some of you are enduring!! If I were homeless back there, would one uf you bring me in to the fire? Bill W. "
We're not really "enduring" it. We're used to it seeing as we get it every year and we were born here. There is one thing we country people do on cold nights, we leave a light on the porch and the door unlocked. There have been people who have froze to death near a house but couldn't get in, like kids and old people. By cold I mean -15 to -20 or so. Really, anything below -15 is just cold, we were snowmobiling on a trip through northern MN when they set a record of -50 a few years ago at Embarrass MN. Embarrass MN is known as the "Icebox of the Nation" as its the coldest spot in the continental USA. As long as you keep riding hard you stay warm. Stop and you would be cold in a few minutes. At -40 taking a leak, it freezes before it hits the ground. My cousin had a crack in his face shield and his eyes froze open several times that day. Kind of creepy to look at as they would turn just about all white.

It seems like I've always had a homeless person here, divorce?Come on over.Forclosure?Come on over.Between apartments, houses, building a new home, burned out, kicked out,any number of reasons. There is always somebody here in a shed, motorhome or camper.I have a walk/drive in cellar,my Model A shop with the wood stove down there.Everybody knows there is a light switch near the door so if it gets too cold they can walk in and camp out by the stove.I've gone down in the morning to fill the stove and found a nephew and his girlfriend cuddled up in the Tudor. They had run out of propane during the night. He would have just turned up the electric blanket and stuck his nose out,but she was a little nervous about freezing to death if the power went out.The Tudor parked by the woodstove was nice and cozy.Tonight I'll leave a light on outside the door for a beacon to head for if they want to come in.The door will be unlocked,I've never owned a door key.I've probably had a dozen or more people set up little guerrilla camps here until they got back on their feet again.

its good to know that there are still places where you can leave the welcoming light on. try that around here and you'll be cleaned out big time sorry to say.

I've never thought much about letting people stay around,it's just something that has always been done by dozens of us.I'm not an easy mark to rob here either.I have one building I rent out as a body shop, there can be guys hanging around there till three AM sometimes. Most of the people that stayed here worked odd hours, there is a good chance there is somebody strolling around the yard at any time of the night. Then,my father lives a few hundred yards away and he takes walks when he gets up at three. He can get a mile of walking in just around my yard with no traffic to worry about.Add in enough guns to invade a small country, light sleepers, two 100 pound rotweilers, and an opening at the end of my driveway that the town cruisers like to sit in during the night makes me pretty worry free about such things.I do have locks on a couple of sheds where I keep some A's during the winter,if they got stolen I might not know until May or June when I go to get them out.

Google "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service. Sam McGee was from
Tennessee ..... if you want to learn how to deal with the cold.
