Default Leaky Fuel Pump Model C

1941 or 1942 truck four banger. The illusive model C to some.
This engine sat for a long time-maybe 20 years. It turned when I got it but it had two stuck valves. Got them free.
Compression now is 90 on all four.
Two issues:
1-leaky fuel pumps. I had three fuel pumps that leaked from the vent holes??? Any ideas why?

2-white smoke from breather tube, with the white moisture foam stuff???

bad diafram in the pump, dried out because of sitting to long, white smoke is water vaper, if it was gray i would say oil smoke, the vapors from running the engine arent being vintilated out the draft tube and are being forced out oil breater, some thing is plugged in ventilation system, i think there is a screem in the draft tube, if so its probably carboned up and not drawing fumes out of the engine

This isn't the elusive Model-C engine (so called of 1932-34 Ford 4-cylinder engines because of a large "C" cast in the head). The 1940-41 4-cylinder is a different breed of cat, more like a tractor engine dropped into a small number of pick-ups at that time. I suspect that the "white moisture stuff" is a water/oil emulsion resulting from a coolant leak somewhere inside or just from condensation in an engine that may have been started up for brief periods of time and shut down before heat could drive off the condensate. Your problem with pump failures has been mentioned by a few and some have attributed it to pump diaphragm deterioration caused by the crappy alcohol infused gas we have nowadays.

Do you have any idea on the HP of this engine?

the only way fuel can get out of fuel pump thru the weep or drain hole is thru the diafram, unless all the screws are loose

Ford listed it as 40 HP, same engine as used in the 9N, 2N, and 8N Ford tractors
except it has a fuel pump and the tractors didn't.

Absolutely!
I had to replace the fuel pumps on my Caravan and Omni every few months due to the crap gas eating up the diaphrams. If the fuel pump problem hasn't been solved, then I'll have to bypass it and use an electric fuel pump made for crap gas if I start driving them again.

Thank you all for the replies. This is a nice little engine that I do not have any plans for other than to hear it run. It ran well other than the issues above.

Fortunately gravity still works for that engine. I ran it with gravity fed fuel for about 20 mins.

What transmission came on the 40 and 41 trucks with this type of engine?

Almost the same, but not quite. The N series Tractors were only 24 HP. Stroke must be different.

Rubber stuff doesn't last forever. A friend bought a '64 1/2 Mercury Comet Caliente with only 7,000 miles on it, beautiful car, stored well, BUT, he spent a small fortune replacing everything in the car that had rubber involved in it. Strangely though, ALL the body rubbers were PRIMO! Bill W.
