V8-60 water pump leak
Thanks to your help the water leak into the crankcase wasn't a bad head gasket or the rail at the bottom of the block rusting out so that left the water pumps.
The pumps had rebuild kits that included everything but the body. These are tapered pumps (instead of straight side) so they have separate rings. One of these is partly broken as the picture shows. Since (I think) this ring is outside the area where water is could this be the problem. The third picture shows the inside of the block. There isn't anything obvious there to me. Any suggestions? I hate to put everything back together with a new ring and have it leak again. Thanks again for your help. |

Re: V8-60 water pump leak
I see that. How can that be the cause of a leak into the oil pan, though? It looks like it is outside the water area. There are two O rings between it and the water.

Re: V8-60 water pump leak
Hi John:
The short answer is the inside gasket failed . This does not seem like a big deal until you look at the design of the w/pump front motor mount housing. Oil from the cam gear area flows through a passage to oil the bushing. When the inside gasket fails the majority of the water is higher than the cam gear. Once the water gets by the inside gasket it will flow uphill into the cam gear area and fall into the oil pan. Water will also leak out the nose cone but that is a impeller fit problem. Good luck.
