I removed the rear shock today and when I removed the cotter pin and large screw it came off fine but shouldn’t there be a spring under the screw holding the cup down? I don’t have one but not sure I need one.

Are you talking about the schock link?? Snyder's, Bratton's, mac's should have a diagram of assembled parts in the link.
